TYPES OF MASSAGE THERAPY

Swedish – this is one of the most common forms of massage, and is relatively gentle, relaxing, and used to increase overall wellbeing while relieving stress along with many of the symptoms associated with health conditions. Swedish massage is wonderful for improving circulation and has the potential to improve blood pressure as well as other vitals.

Shiatsu and Reflexology – there are many pressure points on the body that can produce either deeply relaxing or profoundly invigorating results when treated by a trained massage therapist. These points are typically massaged with finger or elbow pressure in addition to the application of various stretching techniques. In the case of reflexology, the points or zones which are being treated are primarily focused on either the hands, feet, or both. These points can help to regulate all of the organ and gland functions of the body.

Deep Tissue – the massage therapist applies firm, slow pressure to reach deep layers of muscles and connective tissue where chronic aches and pains, spasms, and the results of injury or trauma often manifest. Common conditions treated are recovery from injury, repetitive strain, posture related problems, prolonged spasms, sciatica, or to address specific sports related concerns. Deep tissue can be used to break up scar tissue and adhesions, which often cause pain, inflammation, and limited range of motion. NOTE: This form of massage should be avoided if there is a history of embolism or blood clotting.

Lymphatic Drainage – this form of massage therapy has been in use since the 1930s and has been continually refined over the years. There are only a few simple movements applied by the massage therapist, all of which gently encourage the flow of lymphatic fluid in the body. Some common reasons to consider lymphatic drainage are: treatment of post-surgery edema swelling, autoimmune conditions such as fibromyalgia, to reduce toxins and inflammation, and to support the immune system.

Craniosacral Therapy – developed by physician, researcher, and professor of biomechanics, Dr. John Upledger, CST is a gentle yet profound way of evaluating and treating the body systems by releasing pressures that may be interfering with the central nervous system, brain, and flow of cerebrospinal fluid. Craniosacral therapy improves the overall functioning of the nervous system, reducing stress and tension while also enhancing the internal communication between the organs and glands of the body. Additionally, CST can be helpful in relieving depression, anxiety, and PTSD as well as a list of other health concerns.

Prenatal Massage – these techniques are used to relieve pressure, stress, and other symptoms that come from anatomical changes that occur during pregnancy. Generally considered safe after the first trimester of pregnancy, you should discuss with your massage therapist how prenatal massage can reduce stress hormones, relax and loosen muscles, improve circulation of blood and lymph, and help to reinforce the connection between mind and body.

Reiki – this type of therapy is different from conventional bodywork because there is rarely any direct contact with the body, yet it has found widespread use in spas, clinics, hospitals, and other settings. Essentially, reiki is a way to use focused, positive intent to influence the bioelectromagnetic fields between provider and client. This typically results in enhanced physical, emotional, and mental wellness. Although this may seem woo-woo, there are several National Institutes of Health studies concluding that reiki is an effective form of complementary healthcare.
